Job Description
The biomedical engineer will participate in prototyping and product development of an electronic medical device with a device-body interface that allows sensory substitution of vestibular feedback through stimulation of alternative sensory channels. Primary responsibilities for this position will be the following:
1) Engineering of the device-body interface, which includes mechanical and biomedical designs and optimization of the device interface for reliable operation. The person needs to combine mechanical, electrochemical, and material aspects of the device to achieve best user experience from the device. Device improvement is expected based on analysis of experimental results.
2) Study of the device performance on human subjects, which include psychophysical study of sensory perception from the device and experimental evaluation of the efficacy for balance assistance. The person will be involved in experimental design and testing on human subjects with or without vestibular imbalance, and will work with a variety of people involving patients, therapists, doctors in clinics and balance centers in order to run experiments smoothly and efficiently.
Qualifications and Skills
Sound engineering caliber, with focus on success and a can do attitude to achieve success.
Creative in explorative work, and capable of analyzing problems and working out solutions with diligence and persistence.
Efficient in individual job functions as well as contributing positively and significantly in a team.
B.S. or M.S. (preferred) in a related field (biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering) with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills on device-body interfaces related to medical devices. (tactile, neural, haptic, or brain machine interfaces, etc.)
Experience in electrical stimulation (electrocutaneous, electrotactile, electroneural, etc.) and biocompatibility issues related to stimulating electrodes.
Experience in design and execution of human subject experiments and statistical analysis of testing results.
Mechanical design experience is a plus.
Product development experience on medical devices is a plus.
Experience on regulatory issues and quality assurance of medical devices is a plus.
